Busy environments (restaurant, party, supermarket, children …), too many visual stimuli, noises, smells can quickly lead to (acute) fatigue, headaches and emotional over-reactions.
Sensory-overload occurs when we receive more input than our brain can process, often because the “filter” in our brain (temporarily) does not distinguish adequately between what is important and what is not and therefore allows too much information through.
After a brain injury or after a period of stress or illness, this is very common.
Our treatment consists of: identification of your triggers, practical advice for external filters (blue filters, noise cancelling earplugs, noise reduction, ambient light, …), efficient de-stimulation strategies, working-memory training and energy management.
